I realized that I too often say “yes”, and try not to cause conflict when possible. My parents and teachers always said this, but why should I give that power to other people? I do stand up for myself, but not always in the right situations. This song is about standing up for yourself when it really comes to people who you are close to.
Lyric Meanings:
“I always tried to be an angel”
– I always tried to be perfect and nice
“Kept both feet on the ground”
– Stayed level headed no matter what
“Fake a smile, let it go, just don’t believe it”
– The reaction I was taught to have when someone upsets or disrespects me.
“How am I supposed to make a mark if I just leave it?”
– My response to the above line. I can’t make a difference if I always let people walk all over me.
“They always said I was crazy and a little weird”
– Kids called me “Nasty” due to my nickname Nastia. Now I embrace it.
“Is that the price that I pay cuz I’m not from here?”
– I always felt different for being an immigrant.
“The only crazy one is you…Have you ever tried to find yourself?”
– Telling the bullies of my past to instead look within themselves and realize the problem is them, not me.
“You can’t sustain a life where you’re to blame”
– If you don’t stand up for yourself is not feasible long-term, and you are the only one to blame.
